United States Coins Old 'Hobo Nickels'

What is a Hobo Nickel? They are United States coins old and different denominations that were carved using mostly nickels in the early part of the last century from 1913 to 1940. A sculptural art form modifying the coin in a creative way. The nickel was favored for carving but there were actually many different coins used in the process. Talented coin engravers and people who just wanted to give it a try began creating these coins when the Buffalo nickel entered circulation in 1913. The most famous 'carvers' were Bertram Wiegand known as Bert and his student George Washington Hughes known as Bo.
